One of the biggest events of the year, IFA in Berlin was the single most important thing that happened this week. We have the new announcements nicely rounded up for you here, and those include the Moto Z Play, a Sony Xperia XZ flagship and an X Compact, plus the Gear S3 smartwatch, just to name a few.

Who would have thought then that in the week of IFA the most read article on GSMArena would be one on the yet-to-be-announced iPhone 7. Though when the story is that Apple is planning to offer 32GB/128GB/256GB storage options (effectively doubling the built-in memory compared to last years models), while keeping the respective prices unchanged, the excitement is understandable.

Ongoing Nexus rumors continued this week, before it was revealed that Googles future phones wont be named Nexus at all. The Galaxy S8 rumor mill is picking up speed too, next years A5 might have shown up in b enchmarks, and the Note7s S Pen appears to have a tendency to get stuck. Again.

Thats not the high-end phablets biggest issue, though, not by a long stretch. A worldwide recall of all Note7 units has been officially announced, in light of reports of exploding batteries. Better safe than sorry.

Facebooks Messenger is continuing its quest to add as many features as possible. The latest additions are reactions (which was in testing for a while) and mentions. Both of these will be rolling out across the world "in the coming days".

Youll be able to react to any single message in a thread, and choose between seven different reactions to do so. To add a reaction you press and hold any message and then tap to select one of the following emojis that show up: love, smile, wow, sad, angry, yes, and no. Note that those last two ones can also easily be interpreted as "like" and "dislike", respectively, given the fact that theyre styled like a thumbs up and thumbs down.

While youre in a conversation, youll see reactions to messages in the lower corner, where you get a summary of how many people reacted. Tapping on that will tell you exactly who reacted how. And when someone reacts to one of y our messages, youll get a small animation. If you dont have Messenger open, youll get a notification telling you that someone has reacted to a message of yours. Reactions will be available for all messages - text, stickers, videos, images, GIFs, and even other emojis. And all of this works in all conversations, be they one on one or of the group type.

Mentions on the other hand are handy for group chats when you want to get someones attention. Just type the "@" symbol followed by the first few letters of that persons name or nickname. Youll get a list of people that you can pick from. Then write what you want and that participant in your chat will be notified that youve mentioned him or her. This will be achieved through a new type of notification, which lets them know that you called them out specifically.

Global smartphone sales jumped to 380 million devices in Q1 2017. The number marks a 9% rise from the same period in 2016, according to analyst company Gartner. Samsung and Apple keep their top positions, but Chinese companies Huawei, Oppo, and vivo are accountable for almost a quarter of all global sales.

Samsung still leads comfortably, but experienced a decline in amount of devices shipped due to the discontinued Galaxy Note7. Apple is the second, but its sales remained flat, which meant it lost ground in the growing market.

The following three companies all grew handsomely with Huawei reducing its deficit to Apple from 6.5 to 4.7 percentage points.

Oppo managed to achieve a 94.6% increase in shipments and missed the third place by a margin of 250,000 units or 0.9 percentage points.

vivo sold almost 26 million devices between January and March and holds the fifth place with a 6.8% market share. According to Gartner, “Vivo saw growing demand of its smartphones from the emerging markets in Asia/Pacific, including India, where sales grew over 220 percent thanks to its increased brand appeal”.

Analysts also published distribution of worldwide smartphone sales by OS. Android is still the top operating system with 86.1% of the devices, while iOS accounts for 13.7%. Other platforms only contributed 0.2% of the sales.
